Hypnosis For Children

Hypnosis is suitable for children usually from about the age of six, however it is more effective after the age of twelve. Children have wonderful imaginations and are usually excellent hypnotic subjects. Younger children can benefit from the relaxation associated with hypnosis. In 1981 self-hypnosis was introduced into the national educational curriculum in Sweden. A Parental Permission Form will be needed prior to using hypnotherapy with children.

As currently practiced, hypnotherapy often involves teaching a child how to do self-hypnosis in order to control bad habits, physical symptoms, and other conditions. The child learns to use relaxation techniques and mental images to enter hypnosis.

Once hypnotized, I would typically makes suggestions aimed at producing the desired change in behavior, anxiety level, or symptom intensity. These may range from recalling times of feeling happy, to thinking of the body as a “computer” that the child can “program”.

Your child will also receive specific teaching about their problem as a means of helping them learn to exercise control over their body. For example, a child with nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) may be taught the basic anatomy and function of the bladder. Ultimately, the child is able to induce self-hypnosis when needed to achieve the desired changes.

Children respond to hypnotic suggestions better then adult because of the imaginative world they live in. As adults we may become over-analytical and resistant to imaginative new ideas. One of the exciting things about hypnosis with children is that eventually they can do hypnosis themselves. Self-hypnosis is a wonderful and important self-help tool, offering your children the means to take control over the difficult challenges they will face in growing up. Self-hypnosis can help with academic, sports and artistic performance along with a host of other areas in their lives. It is taught to your child during their first session and reinforced during all subsequent sessions. Teaching children self-hypnosis makes me think of the old adage, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. They will use self-hypnosis their whole life. Teenagers have found hypnosis to be a great method to control stress in their busy lives. Using a hypnosis tape along with learning and practicing self-hypnosis can help them be calmer and more focused while managing their lives.
